The Alhambra

The Alhambra, called this way because of his red walls («qa'lat al-Hamra'», Red Castle), is located in the top of al-Sabika's hill, at the left side of the Darro river, eastside of Granada city, in front of Albaicin and Alcazaba quarters.

His strategic location, since it dominates the whole city and Granada's meadow, make us think that there were other constructions before the Muslims arrived.

Its complex, completely fortified, has an irregular form that limits in its north par with the Darro valley, at the south with al-Sabika ant at the east with "Cuesta del Rey Chico", that separates the Albaicin from the Generalife.

Al-Ahmar, founder of the Nasrid dynasty, settles in the old Albaicin’s Alcazaba in 1238, where the Alhambra’s hill’s ruins called his attention. He decided to start its rebuild and settles there the court, starting the building of the Alhambra as we know.

The Alhambra was a palace, a citadel and a fortress that worked as home for the Nasrid Sultan’s, high public servant, court’s servant and elite soldiers. It gets its glory in the second half of XIV century, during the sultanate of Yusuf I (1333-1354) and the second reign of Muhammad V (1362-1391).

The imperator Carlos V decides in 1526 the building of the palace that carries his name, along with other very meaningful roman renaissance like buildings. The Austria house continues from Felipe II (1556-1598) and his successors in charge of Alhambra’s conservation, that was admired by many artist as Andrea Navaggiero (1524) who was Venice’s ambassador and part of Carlos V’s court.
